~ DOG OF THE MONTH ~
may

Each month starting in February 2026, the PDS team will be choosing a dog at random to participate in this fun feature.

If chosen the PDS team will contact you for information. We can't wait to introduce the amazing dogs that play at PDS to all of you!

We are very excited to feature a rare and unique breed, the Belgian Laekenois, a lovely dog and versatile sport partner this month.

Let’s get to know Rumour through his story as told by his human partner Kim Gilmore: "A Belgian-what?" We get met with that question a lot when people ask me his breed.

In fact, one late night while crossing back into the US from a weekend in Canada, the Border Patrolman was so intrigued he made me take him out so he could meet him.

He knew there were variations on Belgians and let me know that he was familiar with "long coated Malinois (Tervuren), black long coated Malinois (Groenendahl), but a curly Malinois?

No one will believe me!!” I have always admired messy-faced dogs and figured someday, before I was too old to have another puppy, I wanted one.

But what would that be? I went through the different groups pondering if I would have what it would take to be a good guardian of the dogs I saw…then the lightbulb moment…I have had Belgians for over 30 years, why wouldn’t I want a Laekenois? Well, I DID want a Laekenois, but as a preservation breed, there are only about 5,000 left world-wide (most of those being in the Scandinavian countries)!

So, I set forth to see what I could find and who might be breeding with the sole intent of getting on, what I believed, would be, the never-ending waiting list. And then it happened. The brass ring on the merry-go-round of life.

He was 12 weeks old when I first met him and he was immediately mine. The best spontaneous decision I have ever made. At 6 months of age, we had a major health scare.

It was never determined what caused it, but the odds were slim for survival. Even when at his sickest, he told everyone without a doubt, that he had life to live and he was not giving up. So armed for battle, myself, my closest friends and hundreds of people who we have never met, but knew him from Facebook, stood behind him and fight we did.

Six weeks later, and after winning the hearts of 6 veterinarians, and dozens of vet techs, his lab work showed he was on the mend and 8 months later, you would never know he had been sick.

He is indeed my miracle. Rumour currently competes in NASDA and recently passed his evaluation to be a registered Therapy Dog, a job he is excelling at.

He is also dabbling in Barn Hunt (needing one more qualifying run for his RATN) and is starting Tracking as well as Rally Obedience training this spring.

He is also progressing nicely in both Scentwork and BioAg detection. And if that isn’t enough, our hope is to get him started in herding this summer.

Rumour is more formally known as

MLIOCH Cal Curly Coats Rumours LPAT, LI-I, SPAT, SD-I, TPAT, TL-II, UPAT, UL-II, TB-II, VL-S, SVL-B, FDC, CGCA, CGCU, FIT-G, THDN.

We can’t wait to see what Team Rumour does this year!

Congratulations Rumour on being named PDS Dog of the Month for May 2026!
